“If your name were an idiom, what would it be?”

A man named Chun-Chan Wei was accidentally chosen by the channel Discovery, which invited him to attend a show to talk about men’s behavior models in affectionate relationships. During the process of analyzing, this man was forced to go through a painstaking investigation on his choices and affections in the past, causing him to collapse and forcing him to face all of his affective experiences again.

Actor Chun-Chan Wei created a metadrama with this male character, named after his own name, who was never satisfied but never knew what he had been pursuing in relationships. Wei tends to make connections with the mass audience by using his own name, and to further dissect the heterosexual males’ anxiety and to analyze his self-projection on a male’s self-worth. Meanwhile, he also observes how the media constructs images of male figures.

This play is an interesting and lively rhythmed monodrama due to its usage of a variety of aesthetic techniques to set up the “shots” with the atmosphere of prying.

What Chun-Chan Wei shares with us is a true story adapted into a play. In this kind of solo play, the character of the same surname and same family name that Chun-Chan Wei creates provides a vivid image of a male anxious in his affection world. Without affected ways and deliberate modifications, Wei chooses to expose himself bloodily but honestly in front of the the audience.

The Woman In The Lane doesn’t choose to talk about serious issues, give vent in an extreme way, shout loudly or stimulate audience’s senses by presenting twisted body movement. Under the circumstance that most Taiwanese prefer intense plots, in which the playwrights tend to make characters die or seriously injured at the end (I checked all the drama reviews I’ve written before, and over 70% of the plays I commented have someone died at the end of the story), how this play describes romance is so gentle and beautiful, like oasis in desert, making the audience overjoyed unexpectedly.
